BAMS Course Guide: Admission Process, AACCC Counselling, NCISM Curriculum & Career Scope
1. What is the BAMS Degree?
The Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a recognized undergraduate medical degree in India governed by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) under the Ministry of AYUSH. The course spans 5.5 years (4.5 years of rigorous academic and clinical study + 1 year of compulsory rotatory internship).
The modern BAMS curriculum uniquely integrates traditional Ayurvedic principles (Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya) with modern allopathic medical sciences (Modern Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Diagnostics).
2. BAMS Admission & AACCC Counselling Process
Admission to all BAMS seats in India is conducted strictly through NEET UG scores via two counselling authorities:
- AACCC Central Counselling (aaccc.gov.in): Conducts counselling for:
- 15% All India Quota seats in Government & Government-Aided Ayurvedic Colleges across all states.
- 100% seats in National Institutes: National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA Jaipur), Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA Jamnagar), All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA New Delhi), and Faculty of Ayurveda (IMS BHU Varanasi).
- 100% seats in Deemed Ayurvedic Universities.
- State AYUSH Counselling (State CET / DME): Conducts admission for the 85% state quota government seats and 100% private Ayurvedic medical colleges in the state.
