NEET Score vs Rank vs Percentile: Demystifying NTA Normalization, Score Inflation & Tiebreaker Rules
1. Score vs. Percentile vs. Rank: The Core Differences
Aspirants often confuse these three fundamental metrics:
- Raw NEET Score (Marks out of 720): The absolute sum of marks earned based on (+4) for correct answers and (-1) for incorrect answers.
- NEET Percentile Score: Indicates the percentage of total test-takers who scored equal to or lower than you. Calculated as:
Percentile = (Number of candidates with score ≤ your score / Total candidates appeared) × 100. - All India Rank (AIR): The exact sequential position assigned to you among all test-takers nationwide. Medical admission counselling is conducted 100% on AIR, NOT raw marks or percentiles!
2. NTA's Official Inter-se Merit Tiebreaking Protocol
When two or more candidates obtain the exact same total marks out of 720, the NTA implements a strict hierarchical tiebreaker to assign distinct All India Ranks:
- Higher Marks / Percentile in Biology (Botany & Zoology): The candidate with higher raw biology score gets the better rank.
- Higher Marks / Percentile in Chemistry: If tied in Biology, the candidate with higher chemistry marks gets precedence.
- Higher Marks / Percentile in Physics: If tied in Biology and Chemistry, physics marks break the tie.
- Lower Proportion of Incorrect Answers: Candidate with fewer negative marking errors across all subjects gets the better rank.
- Lower Proportion of Incorrect Answers in Biology: Candidate with fewer wrong answers in Biology specifically.
- Lower Proportion of Incorrect Answers in Chemistry: Candidate with fewer wrong answers in Chemistry specifically.
- Lower Proportion of Incorrect Answers in Physics: Candidate with fewer wrong answers in Physics specifically.
- Application Number / Random Computer Generation: If all academic criteria are identical, sequential application number assignment resolves the tie.
