Complete Guide to NEET Stray Vacancy & Mop-Up Round 2026: Rules, Strategy & Low-Rank Opportunities
1. What is the Online Stray Vacancy Round?
The Online Stray Vacancy Round is the fourth and final phase of centralized medical counselling. Following the landmark Supreme Court ruling prohibiting offline institutional stray rounds, all residual vacant seats from AIQ, AIIMS, Central Universities, and Deemed Universities are allotted through a strictly computer-automated Online Stray Vacancy portal operated by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
2. Strict Eligibility Filters for Stray Vacancy
To prevent seat hoarding, the MCC and National Medical Commission enforce rigid eligibility screening:
- Eligible Candidates: Candidates who registered in earlier rounds and do NOT hold any seat in either MCC AIQ counselling or ANY State Quota counselling.
- Strict Ineligibility: Candidates who have been allotted and joined a seat in Round 1, Round 2, or Round 3 of AIQ or State Quota are automatically weeded out through a synchronized national candidate database.
- No Fresh Registration: In the final Stray round, no new registrations are allowed; only previously registered, unallotted candidates can submit/lock choices.
3. Category Conversion Protocol (Deregistration of Reserved Seats)
In the final phases of the Stray Vacancy round, residual unfilled reserved seats are progressively de-reserved and converted to open merit to ensure zero seat wastage:
- ST Seats without eligible takers → Converted to SC Quota.
- SC Seats without eligible takers → Converted to General (UR) Quota.
- OBC-NCL & EWS Seats without eligible takers → Converted to General (UR) Quota.
- NRI Quota Seats in Deemed Universities without applicants → Converted to Management Quota.
4. High-Stakes Caution: The 2-Year Debarment Penalty
If you are allotted a seat in the Online Stray Vacancy Round, you MUST JOIN the institution. If you fail to report, your security deposit is forfeited and you are legally debarred from appearing in NEET UG for the subsequent two academic years. Never add a college to your Stray choice list that you are unwilling to join!
