What is BUMS?
Overview of Unani Tibb — the Greco-Arab medical tradition in India
BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) is the undergraduate degree for the practice of Unani Tibb — the traditional Greco-Arab medical system brought to India by Persian and Arab physicians. It is regulated by the Central Council of Unani Medicine (CCU), now transitioning to the National Commission for Unani Medicine (NCUM), under the Ministry of AYUSH.
Unani medicine is based on the philosophy of Tabiyat (nature/vital force) and the concept of four humours (Akhalt-e-Arba). Treatment methods include Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (diet therapy), Ilaj-bil-Dawa (pharmacotherapy), Ilaj-bil-Tadbeer (regimenal therapy), and Ilaj-bil-Yad (surgery). Regimental therapies include Hijama (cupping), Fasd (venesection), Taleeq (leeching), and Hammam (steam bath).
