BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery) is the undergraduate degree for the practice of Unani Tibb — the traditional Greco-Arab medical system brought to India by Persian and Arab physicians. It is regulated by the Central Council of Unani Medicine (CCU), now transitioning to the National Commission for Unani Medicine (NCUM), under the Ministry of AYUSH.

Unani medicine is based on the philosophy of Tabiyat (nature/vital force) and the concept of four humours (Akhalt-e-Arba). Treatment methods include Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (diet therapy), Ilaj-bil-Dawa (pharmacotherapy), Ilaj-bil-Tadbeer (regimenal therapy), and Ilaj-bil-Yad (surgery). Regimental therapies include Hijama (cupping), Fasd (venesection), Taleeq (leeching), and Hammam (steam bath).

💡
Key Fact: India is the world leader in Unani medical education and practice. Famous brands like Hamdard (Rooh Afza, Safi, Roghan Badam Shirin) and Dawakhana Tibbiya are built on Unani principles. Government BUMS fees are minimal (₹10,000–₹40,000/year).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BUMS and what is Unani medicine?
BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery) is the undergraduate degree for Unani — a traditional Greco-Arab medical system based on the teachings of Hippocrates, Galen, and Ibn Sina (Avicenna). Unani is based on the concept of four humours (Akhalt-e-Arba) — blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. India has the world's largest Unani medical education system.
Is BUMS a good career choice?
BUMS is particularly strong in states with significant Muslim populations (UP, West Bengal, Bihar, AP, Telangana, Karnataka). Unani has a dedicated patient base for chronic diseases, skin conditions, reproductive health, and joint disorders. With MD Unani specialization, career prospects significantly improve. Hamdard products and government AYUSH hospitals provide stable employment.
What NEET rank is needed for BUMS admission?
BUMS is among the most accessible AYUSH courses by NEET rank. Government BUMS closing ranks through AACCC can extend to 4,00,000–8,00,000+ NEET ranks for General category. State quota BUMS seats may close at much higher ranks. Private BUMS colleges accept very high NEET ranks in their management quota.
How many Unani colleges are in India?
India has approximately 55–60 CCU-recognized Unani medical colleges with around 4,500–5,000 BUMS seats. Government Unani colleges number around 20. Unani colleges are concentrated in UP, West Bengal, Bihar, AP, Telangana, Karnataka, Delhi, and Rajasthan.
Can BUMS graduates practice modern medicine?
No. BUMS graduates are licensed to practice Unani medicine only. They cannot prescribe allopathic drugs or practice as allopathic physicians. Some states allow limited prescribing for essential medicines in rural/underserved areas under specific regulations. Always check state-specific CCU/state government guidelines.
